Getting to LAX in 2026: Terminal Construction, the People Mover Delay and How Early to Leave from Ventura County

Airport Transfers · September 24, 2026 · 7 min read

LAX in 2026 is a construction site with an airport inside it. The multi-billion-dollar modernization that began years ago is still reshaping the Central Terminal Area, the roadways and the way you'll eventually reach rental cars and rideshare. If you fly a few times a year from Ventura County, the practical question isn't "what's being built" — it's "how does this change my departure time and my pickup." Here's the plain-language version.

What's under construction right now

  • Terminal 5 rebuild — the demolition and reconstruction of Terminal 5 has meant periodic closures of lanes on both the upper (departures) and lower (arrivals) levels, including short-term shutdowns of pedestrian bridges and parking-structure entrances. Detours are signed, but they slow the horseshoe.
  • Roadway work in the horseshoe — traffic directors and lane shifts are routine. Airport officials repeatedly advise travelers to allow extra time and follow posted detours.
  • The Automated People Mover — the elevated train meant to connect the terminals with the Metro station, economy parking and the rental-car center. It was originally due in 2023 and, as of mid-2026, had still not opened to the public amid a dispute between the airport and its contractor, with target dates pushed repeatedly.
  • The Consolidated Rent-A-Car facility — built and waiting for the People Mover. Until the train runs, rental customers still take company shuttle buses from the terminals.

What the People Mover delay means for you

For now, nothing has replaced the old way of doing things. Rideshare and taxi passengers still walk or ride a shuttle to the LAX-it lot east of Terminal 1. Rental-car customers still wait for a shuttle. Hotel shuttles still circle the horseshoe. Every one of those buses adds to the same roadway congestion the People Mover was designed to remove. The one category of traveler this doesn't affect: passengers with a licensed private car service, who are met at the arrivals curb or inside the terminal and driven straight out.

Until the train opens, the fastest way out of LAX is the one that never touches a shuttle or a lot.

How early to leave from Ventura County in 2026

Our working rule: the airline's recommendation (2 hours domestic, 3 international) plus 15–20 minutes for construction, plus the real drive for your departure hour. From the 805 that gives:

  • Simi Valley / Thousand Oaks — 55 min off-peak, up to 2 h on weekday afternoons. Leave 3 h before a domestic flight (4 h international) at peak; 2 h 45 min at quiet hours.
  • Camarillo — 65 min off-peak, up to 1 h 45 min at peak. Leave 3 h 15 min before a domestic flight at peak.
  • Oxnard / Ventura — 75–85 min off-peak, up to 2 h 10 min at peak. Leave 3 h 30 min before a domestic flight at peak.
  • Holiday weeks and event days (Thanksgiving, the December holidays, major SoFi Stadium events) — add another 30 minutes.

City-specific timing tables are in our Simi Valley to LAX guide and the Camarillo and Oxnard guide.

Departures: where the drop-off happens

Drop-offs remain on the upper level outside each terminal, but lane closures can mean your driver is directed one terminal past yours or to the inner lanes. A chauffeur who works the horseshoe daily knows the current pattern and will take you as close as the day's configuration allows — and will have watched the LAX advisories before leaving for your pickup.

Arrivals: the pickup that skips the lot

Book with your flight number and RideYeah tracks the flight. When you land, your chauffeur is waiting at the arrivals curb outside your terminal or inside at baggage claim with a name sign — your choice. Bags are loaded, and you're on the 405 in minutes. Wait time on arrivals is complimentary, so a late landing doesn't cost you anything. See the full walkthrough on our LAX airport transfers page.

Should you switch to Burbank until the work is done?

For domestic flights from the eastern 805, often yes — though Burbank has its own terminal rebuild underway in 2026. We compare the two in Burbank vs LAX for Ventura County travelers. For international and long-haul trips, LAX remains the only option, and a confirmed private car is the simplest way to take the construction out of the equation.

Good to know

Frequently asked.

How early should I get to LAX in 2026?
Plan on the airline's guidance — two hours before a domestic flight, three before international — plus 15–20 minutes for ongoing terminal construction, plus the real drive time for your departure hour. From Simi Valley or Thousand Oaks at peak, that means leaving about three hours before a domestic flight.
Is the LAX People Mover open yet?
As of mid-2026 the Automated People Mover had still not opened to the public, after repeated delays and a dispute between the airport and its contractor. Until it opens, rideshare passengers continue to use the LAX-it lot and rental-car customers continue to use shuttle buses.
Does a private car service have to use the LAX-it lot?
No. LAX-it is for rideshare and taxi pickups. A licensed private car service like RideYeah meets you at the arrivals curb or inside the terminal, so you avoid the walk or shuttle to the lot entirely.
Does LAX construction affect your fixed fares?
No. RideYeah's fares are fixed regardless of traffic, construction or demand — for example $226.87 for LAX ⇄ Simi Valley or Thousand Oaks and $288.66 for LAX ⇄ Camarillo, with tolls and airport fees included. Fares may change without notice; the booking search gives an exact quote.
