Option 1: Santa Barbara Airbus (shared shuttle)
The Airbus is a scheduled motor-coach service between LAX and Santa Barbara with a few stops along the way. It's the budget option and it's well run, but it works on its timetable, not yours: you wait for the next departure, ride with a full coach, and still need a taxi or rideshare from the drop-off point to your hotel or home. Option 2: Amtrak Pacific Surfliner
The Surfliner is a beautiful ride along the coast — but LAX has no train station. You'd take the FlyAway bus or a rideshare to Union Station downtown (30–60 minutes), wait for a northbound train, ride roughly 2 hours 45 minutes to Santa Barbara, then get to your final address. Realistically that's a four-to-five-hour journey with three transfers and your luggage in tow. Best for: train lovers with time to spare and light bags.
Option 3: Rental car
A rental gives you wheels for the whole trip, which matters if you plan to explore the Santa Ynez Valley or drive up to Los Olivos. The costs are the ones people forget: the shuttle to the rental center (the People Mover that was supposed to replace it was still not open as of mid-2026), the counter line, LA traffic on the 405 and 101 after a long flight, gas, and hotel parking in Santa Barbara or Montecito that can run $30–60 a night. Best for: multi-day trips where you'll genuinely drive every day.
Option 4: Private luxury SUV (door-to-door)
